South African CV format

Use a reverse-chronological layout with standard headings: Personal Details (contacts), Professional Summary, Work Experience, Education & Qualifications, Skills, Certifications & Licences, Languages and References. One to two pages is standard; graduates should aim for one. Single-column designs work best with the online portals used by large employers.

Should you include your ID number?

It is common to see ID numbers on South African CVs, but it is safer not to include it. Your ID number is sensitive personal information under POPIA and can be misused if your CV is shared widely. Provide it when an employer formally requests it during the hiring process. Also leave out age, marital status, religion and a photo unless asked.

Presenting Matric and post-school qualifications

  • Matric: “National Senior Certificate (Matric), Bachelor's pass, [School], 2016.” Add key subjects and marks if you are a recent school leaver.
  • Post-school: list degrees, diplomas and certificates with the NQF level where helpful, e.g. “Certificate: Office Administration (NQF 5)”.
  • Trade qualifications: trade test, N-levels and wireman's licence for artisans.
  • Foreign qualifications: mention SAQA evaluation if you have it.

Licences and registrations

Many South African jobs require specific licences. List them clearly: driver's licence code (e.g. Code B, Code EB, Code C1), PrDP for professional drivers, PSIRA grade for security officers, SACSSP for social workers, HPCSA or SANC for health professionals, ECSA for engineers, SAICA or SAIPA for accountants. Mention whether you have your own vehicle if the job involves travel.

Achievement examples for South African CVs

  • “Achieved 112% of an R18M annual sales target and opened 60 new outlets.”
  • “Built a claims dashboard used by 200 managers, finding R4M in annual savings.”
  • “Installed 60+ rooftop solar PV systems from 5 kW to 100 kW.”
  • “Managed a caseload of 60 families, writing statutory reports for the Children's Court.”

Employment equity and other sensitive details

Some application forms ask for race, gender and disability status for employment equity reporting. These belong on the employer's form, not on your CV, unless an advert specifically invites candidates to state them. Keep your CV focused on skills and achievements.

References in South Africa

South African employers usually contact references before making an offer. List two or three professional references (name, position, company and phone), or write “References available on request” and have them ready. Always ask your references first.

South African CV checklist

  • Phone with +27 and a professional email.
  • No ID number, age or photo.
  • Matric and post-school qualifications (with NQF levels where useful).
  • Driver's licence code and registrations.
  • Achievements with numbers (R, %, clients, targets).
  • Two or three references.
  • PDF named Firstname_Lastname_CV.pdf.

South African CV examples by career

  • Retail and hospitality: customer volumes, sales and upselling, POS systems, food safety certificates.
  • Sales: target versus achievement (in rand), territories, new accounts, driver's licence and own car.
  • Artisans: trade test, N-levels, wireman's licence, CoC, installation types, safety record.
  • Tech and data: stack, certifications (AWS, Microsoft), projects and business impact.
  • Social and health professions: SACSSP, HPCSA or SANC registration, caseload and outcomes.
  • Learnerships and graduates: Matric subjects and marks, tertiary studies, projects and volunteering.

Walkthrough: the South African sample CV

The sales representative CV above shows what South African recruiters want to see. The summary quantifies performance (112% of an R18M target, 60 new outlets) and names the region. Experience lists outlets managed, wholesaler negotiations and the CRM used. Education shows a National Diploma and Matric, and the skills include “Driver's licence Code B (own car)”, a key requirement for field sales roles. There is no ID number, age or photo, in line with good POPIA-aware practice.

CVs for learnerships, internships and graduate programmes

Learnerships, SETA-funded programmes and graduate internships are a common entry route into work in South Africa. For these, your CV should lead with your Matric results and any tertiary studies, then volunteering, part-time work and projects. Many programmes also ask for a motivation letter, certified copies of your ID and qualifications, and proof of residence. Read each advert carefully and apply well before the closing date, because popular programmes receive thousands of applications.

Certified copies and supporting documents

Employers and programmes often ask for certified copies of your ID, Matric certificate and qualifications at application or interview stage. Have recent certified copies ready (many organisations want them certified within the last three months), but do not attach your ID to every CV you send out. Share sensitive documents only with verified employers and through official channels. If a so-called recruiter asks you to pay a fee or to send your ID and bank details before any interview, treat it as a likely scam and report it.
