Motivation letter template and sample

Updated 2 November 2026 · By the AfriCV career team

A motivation letter explains why you want something (a job, a place on a graduate programme, a learnership, a bursary or a scholarship) and why you deserve it. Unlike a cover letter, which focuses mainly on experience, a motivation letter puts more weight on your goals, values and the reasons behind your application. It is widely requested in South Africa for learnerships, bursaries and graduate programmes, and by universities and scholarship bodies across Africa.

This page gives you a motivation letter template, a complete sample, tips for different purposes (job, bursary, learnership, university) and the CV that accompanies the sample.

Motivation letter vs cover letter

A cover letter answers “Why are you qualified for this job?” It is mostly about experience and results. A motivation letter answers “Why do you want this, and what drives you?” It still mentions achievements, but it tells more of your story: what inspired you, what you want to learn and how the opportunity fits your future. If you have little work experience, a motivation letter lets your character, commitment and goals carry the application.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a generic letter that could be sent anywhere.
  • Telling your life story without connecting it to the opportunity.
  • Focusing only on hardship without showing your strengths and plans.
  • Going over one page (unless a longer essay is requested).
  • Ignoring the specific questions or word limits in the application instructions.

Strong opening lines for a motivation letter

  • “I am applying for the [programme] because I want to [specific goal], and your focus on [feature] is exactly the training I need.”
  • “Growing up in [place], I saw [problem]. Studying [field] is how I intend to help solve it.”
  • “Ever since I [formative experience], I have known that [field] is where I want to build my career.”

Walkthrough: the sample motivation letter

The sample letter opens with a clear goal (growing from developer to engineer) instead of a generic statement. The second paragraph tells a short story, from building a school club website to shipping features for 200,000 customers, which shows passion with evidence. The third paragraph is specific about the programme (mentorship and production systems) and says what the applicant will contribute, including mentoring others. It stays under one page and ends on commitment, which is exactly what selection committees look for. Notice too that it never pleads; it explains, gives evidence and looks forward, a tone that reads as mature and confident to any selection panel.

The Selection Committee
Future Builders Graduate Programme
Johannesburg

Dear Selection Committee,

MOTIVATION LETTER: FUTURE BUILDERS SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

I am applying for the Future Builders Software Engineering Programme because I want to grow from a capable developer into an engineer who builds systems that millions of South Africans rely on.

My interest in technology started in Grade 10, when I built a simple website for my school's soccer club. Since then I have completed a BSc in Computer Science at Wits, and for four years I have built fintech applications used by over 200,000 customers. The moment I saw a small change I made cut page load times by 45%, and support tickets dropped as a result, I knew this was the work I wanted to do for the rest of my career.

Your programme stands out because of its focus on mentorship and real production systems. I want to learn how senior engineers design for scale and reliability, and I am ready to contribute from day one, especially in React, Node.js and automated testing. In return, I will bring hard work, curiosity and a commitment to sharing what I learn with the next group of developers, as I do now when mentoring two junior colleagues.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be proud to represent the programme and the community it serves.

Yours sincerely,

Thabo Nkosi

Can I use the same motivation letter for several bursaries?

Reuse your story, but tailor the opportunity-specific parts each time.
