CV objective examples: 40 career objectives you can adapt
Updated 2 November 2026 · By the AfriCV career team
A career objective is a short statement at the top of your CV that says what kind of job you want and what you bring to it. It is most useful for school leavers, graduates, career changers and anyone applying for attachment or an internship. Experienced professionals usually write a professional summary instead, which focuses on proven results. Both sit in the same place on your CV and do the same job: making the recruiter want to keep reading.
Below you will learn when to use an objective, a simple formula for writing one, and 40 CV objective examples for popular careers in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and across Africa. Adapt them with your own qualifications and achievements. Do not copy them word for word.

Objective or summary: which should you use?
Use a career objective if you have little or no work experience, are changing careers, or are applying for attachment, internship or a trainee programme. Use a professional summary if you have two or more years of relevant experience: lead with what you have achieved, not what you want.
Avoid the old-fashioned, generic objective that appears on thousands of CVs: “To work in a challenging environment where I can utilise my skills for the growth of the organisation.” It says nothing about you and wastes the most valuable space on your CV.
A simple formula for a strong CV objective
Keep it to two or three sentences (about 30–60 words) and change it for each application.
- 1
Who you are
Your qualification or current status, e.g. “Final-year BSc Nursing student” or “Certified electrician”.
- 2
What you offer
Two specific strengths with proof, e.g. “experienced in triage during clinical rotations and trained in BLS”.
- 3
What you want
The exact role or placement, e.g. “seeking a nursing internship in an emergency department”.
