Professional CV templates for experienced candidates
Updated 2 November 2026 · By the AfriCV career team
When you have a few years of experience, your CV has to do more than list jobs. It needs to show progression, measurable results and the specialist skills that make you worth interviewing. A professional CV template gives that content a polished, confident frame without distracting from it.
Below is a professional CV sample, an explanation of what separates a professional CV from an average one, and guidance on choosing between classic and modern designs. Every template is free to fill in, and all of them are made with real text so your CV stays readable by applicant tracking systems.

What makes a CV look professional?
Professional is mostly about content and consistency, not colour. Recruiters judge professionalism in the first few seconds by looking at structure, language and evidence. These are the signals they notice:
- A clear professional title under your name that matches the job you want, e.g. “Senior Accountant, CPA(K)” or “Registered Nurse (RN, RM)”.
- A targeted summary with years of experience, specialisms and one or two headline results.
- Achievements with numbers: budgets managed, people led, sales grown, time saved, errors reduced.
- Visible career progression: promotions and bigger responsibilities over time.
- Professional credentials: licences, memberships and certifications with dates.
- Flawless spelling and consistent formatting, with no mix of fonts, date styles or tenses.
Classic or modern: which professional template should you use?
Classic professional templates
Harvard, Executive, Corporate and Cairo use serif fonts or ruled headings and a single column. They suit banking, law, audit, government, academia and senior management, where tradition and clarity are valued.
Modern professional templates
Modern, Cape Town, Nairobi and Lusaka add a coloured sidebar or header band. They work well in technology, marketing, sales, NGOs and media, and they stand out when you email your CV directly to a hiring manager.
When in doubt
Choose a single-column design. It is ATS-safe, prints well and is never judged as too informal. You can always switch designs later; your content stays the same.
How to write a professional CV, section by section
- 1
Professional summary
Three to four lines: who you are, years of experience, your specialism and a result. Example: “Full-stack developer with 4 years building fintech apps in React and Node.js; cut page load time by 45% and shipped features used by 200,000+ customers.”
- 2
Core skills
List 8–14 hard skills (systems, methods, tools) and a few relevant soft skills. Mirror the wording of the job advert so recruiters searching the ATS can find you.
- 3
Experience
Give each role three to six bullets. Use the formula: action verb + what you did + measurable result. Put your most impressive achievement first in each job.
- 4
Education and credentials
List degrees and professional qualifications with dates. Include grades or class of degree if they are strong and recent.
- 5
Extras that add value
Board roles, publications, awards, languages and professional memberships, but only if they support the job you want.

Create my CVProfessional CV length and layout
Two pages is standard for experienced professionals. Senior leaders, academics and development-sector specialists sometimes need three, but every line should still earn its place. Put your strongest material in the top half of page one. That is the part every recruiter reads.
Use 10–11 pt body text, consistent margins and enough white space between sections. In our design panel you can adjust font size, spacing and section order, and rename headings (for example “Career History” instead of “Work Experience”) without editing any layout code.
Mistakes that make a CV look unprofessional
- An unprofessional email address or an old phone number.
- Listing duties copied from a job description instead of your own results.
- Using “I”, “me” and “my” repeatedly, or writing in the third person (“He is a dedicated…”).
- Skill bars or star ratings that are impossible to verify.
- Unexplained gaps, or dates that do not match LinkedIn.
- Too many fonts, colours or icons.
Walkthrough: the professional sample CV
The developer CV above uses a two-column Modern design because it is aimed at technology employers, who usually receive CVs by email or through modern ATS tools that handle sidebars well. The sidebar holds contacts, skills, certifications and languages, freeing the main column for a dense, results-driven work history. If the same developer applied to a bank's online portal, switching to a single-column design like Corporate or Engineer would take one click and keep the content identical.
Look at the bullets: each pairs a technology with a business outcome (load time down 45%, 2 million requests a day at 99.95% uptime, fewer support tickets). That is what makes a CV feel professional to a hiring manager: evidence of judgement and impact rather than a list of tools.
Professional summary formulas
- “[Title] with [X years] in [sector], specialising in [area]. [Headline result with number]. Known for [strength].”
- “[Credential]-qualified [title] who has [biggest achievement]. Experienced in [skill 1], [skill 2] and [skill 3].”
- “Results-driven [title] with a track record of [type of result] across [number] [projects/clients/teams].”

Frequently asked questions
What is the best professional CV template?
For most professionals a single-column template such as Classic, Harvard or Corporate is best, because it is clear and ATS-safe. Two-column designs suit creative and tech roles.
How many pages should a professional CV be?
Usually two pages. Three is acceptable for senior, academic or development-sector roles.
Should I include a photo on a professional CV?
Not unless the employer asks. Most professional CVs in Africa and internationally do not include photos.
Can I use a modern template for a corporate job?
Yes, if it is clean and readable. For very traditional employers, a single-column template is the safer choice.
